You might wake up many times during the night to &#8220;catch your breath,&#8221; but you probably won\u2019t notice it unless a partner points it out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>And yes, dear reader, this means we must monitor your breathing\u00a0<em>while you sleep<\/em>. Back when our grandparents had to walk to school uphill both ways, the only way for us to conduct such a sleep study was to send you to an overnight lab facility and hook you up to approximately 64 billion wires and sensors and wish you, \u201cgood luck\u201d as you attempt to sleep in an unfamiliar bed like a futuristic cyborg.\u00a0<\/p><p>Thankfully, technology has come a long way in prioritising the comfort of the patient and we can now successfully diagnose obstructive sleep apnea with a disposable\u00a0at-home sleep study\u00a0(yes, at your home!), also referred to as a sleep test. Let\u2019s dig into the most affected professions:\u00a0<br \/>&#8211; CMV or CDL truck drivers<br \/>&#8211; Shift Workers &#8211; security guards, police, doctors and nurses, firefighters, EMS, pilots, military<br \/>&#8211; Occupational Workers &#8211; construction, factory workers<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Truck Drivers (CDL\/CMV Operators)<\/h3><p>Nearly\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpaprx.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">one-third (28 percent) of commercial truck drivers have mild to severe sleep apnea<\/a>, according to a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the American Transportation Research Institute of the American Trucking Associations.<\/p><p>With long hours on the road, sometimes including the use of stimulants to stay awake for long stretches, truck drivers are some of the most susceptible professionals to be at risk for OSA. This, coupled with an often sedentary lifestyle make these individuals at\u00a0<em>such high risk<\/em>\u00a0that many states require\u00a0CPAP therapy\u00a0in order to even be able to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in interstate commerce.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shift Workers<\/h3><p>For those who work non-traditional hours like split shift, graveyard shifts, early morning shifts, or rotating shifts, the prevalence of sleep disorders is so great that they\u2019ve coined the term:\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/shift-work-sleep-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Cleveland Clinic estimates that between<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/12146-shift-work-sleep-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u00a010 to 40 percent of shift workers experience SWSD<\/a>. And as mentioned above, those who have regularly shifting schedules are more likely to be affected as their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/circadian-rhythm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circadian rhythm<\/a>\u00a0is in a constant state of flux.\u00a0<\/p><p>This umbrella of workers includes, but is not limited to: security guards, doctors and nurses, firefighters, EMS workers, pilots and air-traffic controllers, active\u00a0military, and police officers. I think we speak for us all in that we hope the above folks are well-rested and in tip-top shape both mentally and physically.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industrial &amp; Occupational Workers<\/h3><p>The builders and assemblers of our infrastructure and goods that make the world go \u2018round; these folks, who work in OSHA-regulated fields such as Construction or Factory Work carry massive risks of occupational hazards while on the job. And while these regulating bodies enact safety guidelines whenever and wherever possible, they aren\u2019t sleeping in the bed next to each employee to know if they\u2019re suffering from a sleep disorder.\u00a0<\/p><p>According to another research abstract, compared to controls, the\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26951401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">odds of work accident was found to be nearly\u00a0<em>double<\/em>\u00a0in workers with OSA<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Thankfully, obstructive sleep apnea is\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26951401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">the single most important preventable medical cause of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and driving accidents<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div><div id=\"rank-math-faq\" class=\"rank-math-block\"><div class=\"rank-math-list \"><div id=\"faq-question-1625767804630\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\"><h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">Sleep Apnea Treatment Options<\/h3><div class=\"rank-math-answer \"><p>Once you have received the results of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpaprx.com\/home-sleep-testing\">at-home sleep test<\/a>, you will need two things: a\u00a0CPAP Prescription\u00a0and your CPAP device which includes a\u00a0CPAP machine\u00a0(or\u00a0APAP\u00a0or\u00a0BiPAP machine) and a\u00a0CPAP mask.
