Which mask, tubing and filters will be compatible with my sleep apnea machine?

How do I figure out what size mask I should wear?

There are several options to help you find the right CPAP mask. Being fit for a mask by a trained professional will always be the best way to ensure accurate sizing. To measure for a Nasal Mask, the preferred method is:

What are the different types of CPAP masks and how are they different?

There are three main CPAP mask categories. Each type of mask has its own pros and cons based on health conditions and personal preferences. CPAP users may also find that they have changing needs on a daily basis, and thus they use different kinds of masks at home to fit these varying situations. The three main categories of CPAP masks are:

Full-Face CPAP Masks: Full face masks don’t actually go over the entire face, but they do cover both the nose and the mouth. If you breathe with your mouth open, or you have frequent problems with allergies and nasal congestion, this is the style of mask we recommend.
Nasal Masks: Nasal masks cover, you guessed it, the nose only. These masks are held in place using a four point headgear. Nasal masks are one of the most popular styles of CPAP masks.
Nasal Pillows Masks: Nasal pillow masks are the smallest and most discreet of the three mask styles. They fit up inside your nostrils. If you are experiencing skin irritation with other types of masks, this is the style we recommend since they have the least amount of contact with your face.

Does Medicare & Medicaid Cover CPAP Therapy?

While Medicare covers CPAP therapy for sleep apnea, healthcare providers must follow stringent treatment guidelines. These Medicare protocols include a requirement that the PAP machine and related supplies be procured from an approved Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider.

Medicare recipients cannot submit claims for reimbursement on their own behalf. All Medicare claims need to be billed from an equipment company that contains a Medicare provider number.

Medicaid programs are administered by state governments, with each state setting its own guidelines regarding eligibility and services. While Medicaid programs generally follow Medicare coverage guidelines for CPAP therapy, including requirements to go through approved DME provider, the specific rules differ between states and various Medicaid programs. Contact your Medicaid insurance provider for specific coverage benefits and authorization rules.

Does a warranty come with my CPAP machine?

Most CPAP machines are warranted for two years. We are happy to handle any problems that arise and will work with you to fix whatever problem you might have. Please know that some repairs can take up to 2-3 weeks to process. Rental machines are available to help you while the manufacturer of your machine is attempting repair or replacement. How should I clean and maintain my CPAP supplies?

Keeping your mask clean is extremely important. It’s not only an issue of sanitation but it’s an issue of safety and your health. How to receive reimbursement

While virtually all health insurance plans now cover CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, cpapRX.com does not bill private insurance companies for the cost of your CPAP supplies. You can however submit a request for reimbursement to your insurance company to cover your out-of-pocket costs.

Most of the costs incurred by CPAP therapy fall into two categories: clinical care and equipment. Clinical care includes doctor visits and consultations, as well as procedures like in-lab sleep studies. Equipment costs for CPAP therapy are your periodic replacement parts like your CPAP masks and seals, tubing, filters, etc.

To help our patients with this process, we have outlined some instructions on how to file an insurance claim on your behalf for both CPAP and BiPAP supplies.

If you happen to breathe with your mouth open and are using a nasal mask, pressure can be reduced making treatment ineffective. How often should I change my CPAP supplies?

CPAP and BiPAP supplies are disposable and are meant to be replaced frequently to ensure that they are safe, and effective, for your treatment. If you are using things like masks, tubing, filters, and headgear for extended periods of time – past their suggested replacement frequency – you can jeopardize your CPAP therapy. Your mask cushions are delicate and can develop leaks, clogged filters can allow dust and pollen to be delivered into your airway, and over-stretched headgear can require extreme tightening, causing pain and leaving marks on your face.

Take a look at the recommendations for replacement frequency and consider sticking to this schedule to ensure safe and effective therapy.

What if I continue to experience mask leakage during the night?

Mask leakage is important to fix and can be caused by a variety of issues. One thing to know is that CPAP masks are never intended to be 100% airtight and it is normal to experience just a little leaking from time to time. Before shopping for a new CPAP mask, there are a couple things you can do to help fix the issue. First, with your machine running, pull your CPAP mask away from your face and let the seal inflate fully. Next, try setting the CPAP mask back into place to see if that fixes the issue. If that doesn’t work, perhaps your CPAP mask is too tight. Try loosening the head straps to allow proper inflation of the seal. If you are trying a new mask out, please remember to allow yourself ample time to adjust to the CPAP mask. If you continue to have problems, give us a call and we’ll help you out.

Why do I need a CPAP Prescription?

Under the federal law and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) medical devices are placed in three classes, class l, ll, or lll, based on their risks and the regulatory controls needed to provide reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness.

Class I – Have a mild risk for users.
Class II – Have a moderate risk for users.
Class III – Have a high risk for users.

CPAPs are considered to be a Class ll Medical Device because:

You need prescription that includes pressure settings based on your apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and lowest oxygen saturation (Sao2), after taking a sleep test. Otherwise, inadequate CPAP settings could be harmful to your health.
Correct pressure settings can only be determined by a qualified physician based on your sleep study. Prescriptions provide accurate pressure settings based on your individual needs.
If you’re suffering from central or mixed sleep apnea instead of only obstructive sleep apnea will need to be treated with a slightly different PAP machine. A sleep doctor’s recommendation or prescription ensures that will get the correct device.

Can I Get A CPAP Without Prescription?

If you see a used CPAP online or hear that your friend has one in storage, don’t use it. USED CPAP machines have a variety of risks.

The plastic and materials break down over time, leading to cracks and air leaks, causing your CPAP therapy to be less effective.
CPAP machines collect germs, viruses, skin cells, bacteria, and more. So you may be breathing in all of those pathogens from the previous user.
If you need a BiPAP and end up with a CPAP you won’t receive proper treatment.
You don’t know how often a recycled CPAP machine was used or if it works correctly. CPAP machines need to be replaced every five years!

An at-home sleep test can be ordered at cpapRX.com. Once your sleep test arrives you will wear the device for one night and then return it, so a qualified sleep physician can review your results.

Once the at-home sleep test is completed sleep specialists will analyze and interpret your results. Your study data will first be reviewed and scored by a registered sleep technologist then interpreted by a board-certified sleep physician.

This data along with your medical history is used to diagnose your sleep problem and make recommendations for therapy based on your test results and unique needs.

If your CPAP prescription mentions a “Life time Need” or says “99 months”, it’s valid for as long as you need therapy. If your prescription shows an expiration date, it is valid until the date shown. If it contains a certain amounhow lont of refills, these items can be dispensed per the number of times listed. We are happy to review your prescription to determine when it can be used.
